The Ministry of Agriculture introduces students to some of today`s most sought-after disciplines. From the 440-acre farm a few miles from campus to the $1.2 million animal science teaching facility, Austin Peay has something for every major in agriculture and learns the professional skills necessary for career success. Agriculture is one of the main specialties you can choose because it meets a basic human need – food and other natural resources. Agriculture courses are taught in small classes with individual attention by lecturers with experience and expertise in agriculture. Students will have the opportunity to learn on the ground at the 440-acre university farm to study livestock and other animals, crops, forestry, wildlife and renewable energy. Sustainability students take courses in environmental sciences, biology, earth sciences, animal, plant and soil sciences, chemistry, environmental and earth sciences, and natural resources). These courses introduce students to the wide range of areas related to sustainability, from food production to flood protection to environmental risks. There are also opportunities for internships and cooperation courses to work with agricultural organizations, agencies and agribusinesses. Upon completion of this program, students must be prepared to work in sustainable agriculture, sustainable development, or other positions related to sustainability, as well as in related graduate programs. A recent national study predicts a shortage of agricultural college graduates in management and science. Graduates with management and finance skills will be in demand.

Agribusiness, government agencies and related industries need managers and technicians who can communicate with farmers. Graduates who expand their agricultural experience with courses in economics and computer science can enhance their employment opportunities in agriculture. The concentrations of the agricultural industry and agricultural sciences are specially designed for this type of occasion. Graduates of the department are also regularly accepted into many graduate schools such as Clemson University, Mississippi State, Penn State, University of Georgia, University of Kentucky, University of Tennessee and others. Pre-Veterinary Club – This club is open to all agricultural students and other interested students of the university. Its purpose is to promote community among agricultural students, especially pre-veterinary majors. Activities typically include social activities and guest speakers, as well as facility visits with veterinary programs. Students should take responsibility for staying informed of the degree requirements for the degrees they are pursuing. Therefore, scheduled appointments with an assigned academic advisor per semester are required before the student can enroll. The focus on sustainable development is designed to prepare students for a variety of new jobs in sustainable agriculture and natural resource management, as well as graduate programs in these fields. Courses are taught in small classes with individual attention by lecturers with experience and expertise in agriculture.
